Last week, bills were introduced in Congress seeking to authorize Mother’s Day Commemorative Silver Dollars. Similar proposals were also made during the last two sessions of Congress.
The next product release from the United States Mint will be the Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set featuring Andrew and Eliza Johnson. The post also explores the pricing increases for the product and related bronze medals.
Bloomberg reports that in the first week of May, the US Mint sold 62,000 ounces of gold bullion. If the pace continues, sales may reach a new monthly record.
Collectors Universe, the parent company of coin grading firm PCGS, reported their financial results for the third quarter. Net service revenues increased 17% to a record high of $12.6 million. This was primarily driven by an increase in coin service revenues, led by modern and world coin submissions.

People are apparently still using the US Mint’s Direct Ship Program to earn credit card rewards. After the problems were first widely reported, the US Mint added this to the product pages: “By clicking Add to Cart I agree that I understand, and will comply with, the intended purpose of the program.”
Another tale of a massive coin hoard acquisition from the former chief buyer for Paramount International Coin Corporation.
Heritage’s auctions held for the Central States Numismatic Society convention realized $23.9+ million for U.S. coins and $6.2+ million for currency.

An upcoming auction to be conducted by Bonhams & Butterfields is highlighted by a collection of 1,000 silver dollars with an interesting back story.
A local coins dealer in Ames, Iowa decided to compete with traveling roadshow buyers who came to town.
An artist will cover a large gallery at the Guggenheim Museum with 100,000 in $1 bills. Handlers are expecting to spend 13 days pinning bills to the walls.
And now for some notable auctions. First, the 2008 Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set that includes a Monroe Presidential Dollar with missing edge lettering.
Next, this seller has individual auctions for each of the 2007 First Spouse Gold Coins, in proof and uncirculated versions. All coins are in their original US Mint packaging.
Last, the 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent graded PCGS MS64RB in an old rattler holder.
