Best Way for Kids to Interact with Autistic Peers?

Imagine this.

A group of typical youngsters, ages six, seven or eight, are playing at the school playground during recess.  They're swinging, sliding, playing an open-ended game of catch.

An autistic peer is pacing at the edge of the playground area.  He occasionally glances at the other kids, but mostly seems off in a world of his own.
