Which abilities "count?"
Typically developing kids and adults are often praised for their wonderful athletic skills, singing voices or artistic abilities. An adult seeing a youngster draw well might ask: "are you going to be an artist?" A teacher seeing a student excel in presentation skills may say "you should consider being a lawyer!" An adult who stands up and EmCees a PTA event might even be asked "have you considered doing this for a living?" Across the board, among our typically-developing children and friends, we value skills that may fall outside the three R's of reading, writing and 'rithmetic and the ever-elusive "social skills."
