Why photoshop when we can build the real thing? At a big event this week put on by BMW’s in-house M GmbH brand to celebrate all things M, the company spilled all the details on the M3 pickup that we’ve seen rounding the Nürburgring race track. While Kay Segler, the outgoing head of BMW’s M GmbH high-performance division, declared the car a joke for April Fools’ day, he was full of praise for the vehicle’s capabilities.
Powered by the regular M3′s 414-hp, 4.0-liter V-8, the M3 pickup is around 150 pounds lighter than the base coupe. “This is the fastest targa pickup in the world,” Segler raved—shaming the rest of the highly competitive targa pickup segment. It’s obviously ungoverned, as Segler revealed he saw 186 mph—and there was potential to go faster, “but we were running out of road.” The company also touts the pickup’s maximum payload capacity of about 990 pounds and its removable trailer hitch. The M3 ute was assembled by M GmbH’s employees, as well as interns and engineering students.
