Test Yourself for Electric-Vehicle Compatibility, Courtesy of BMW’s EVolve Mobile App

“Ask your telephone if an electric vehicle is right for you.” That’s the directive of BMW’s cloyingly named EVolve mobile app. Available today in the iTunes App Store and later this month in the Android Marketplace, EVolve is a free, simple tracker that helps you decide whether an electric vehicle would slot seamlessly into your life.

The process? Launch the app and punch a button at the beginning and end of each and every car trip. Using the phone’s GPS, the app traces the route travelled, logging the mileage and observing driving habits. According to BMW, three trips are enough to come up with an initial idea of whether or not an EV would work for a given driver. More serious users can then go to the company’s BMWActivateTheFuture.com website, allowing them to calculate projected savings on gas expenses, earn badges—please, any The Treasure of the Sierra Madre jokes are welcome, care of this publication—and check out how they rate against other drivers around the country. The purpose, of course, is data mining; BMW provides the free service in return for the details of your commute that it can collect without you having to drive one of its fleet of Mini E or 1-series ActiveE evaluation vehicles.

That and they like you, these titans of industry. They really like you!
