Welcome to Coin Update!
We’re back with another round up of coin collecting news and articles from around the internet! First, a review of the 2012 Red Book, which is now in its 65th edition. Also, the latest US Mint product release, fake Euro scam, the 2000 Goodacre Presentation Sacagawea Dollars, Silver Eagles with “S” mintmark, legal tender laws, the internet and rare coin auctions, gold and silver prices, April Fools articles, and notable auctions. On to the links…
A review of the 2012 Red Book from Louis Golino. This will represent the 65th edition of the popular guide book of United States coins.
Today, the US Mint began sales of the 2011 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set. Pricing for this product was adjusted higher prior to the start of sales, following an increase in the price of silver.
A multimillion euro coin scam has been uncovered. It involved 29 tonnes of €1 and €2 coins that were disassembled, sent to China as scrap, subsequently reassembled, brought back into Germany, and exchanged for cash value at the Bundesbank.
CoinWorld reports that Jeff Garrett acquired the nearly 2,000 remaining “Goodacre Presentation” Sacagawea Dollars and had them graded and encapsulated in special holders from PCGS.
Production of Silver Eagle bullion coins is expected to begin at the San Francisco Mint soon. Dave Harper argues that these coins should carry the “S” mintmark, even though it might lead to an increase collector demand.
David L. Ganz covers Ron Paul’s bill which seeks to to “repeal the legal tender laws, to prohibit taxation on certain coins and bullion and to repeal superfluous sections related to coinage.”
Doug Winter has an excellent post on how the internet has changed rare coin auctions in the past ten years.
Police are looking for a man who sold 160 counterfeit Morgan Dollars in New Jersey for $1,200. That works out to $7.50 per coin. If someone offers you something too good to be true…
Patrick Heller provides a follow up to his forecasts for gold and silver prices.
It’s April Fools Day on the internet. In my opinion, here’s the best coin related April Fools article about the shortages occurring for the 2011 Buffalo Gold Tribute Proofs.
Here’s another one (I’m pretty sure) about the Whitman Compass that will help you go straight to the dealers who have coins you’re looking for.
And now for some notable auctions. First, this seller offers a complete collection of Morgan and Peace Dollars in an older Whitman album. It is stated that more pictures are available on request, which would be recommended for better evaluation of the set.
Next, here is an auction for the original empty packaging for America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins. I haven’t seen one of one of these “blue monster boxes” until now.
Last, the key date 1932-D Washington Quarter graded PCGS MS63.
That’s it for this update. Have a great weekend!
