Welcome to Coin Update!

We’re back to bring you another fresh round up of coin collecting news from around the internet! The latest coin legislation seeks to authorize commemorative coins for the 225th anniversary of the U.S. Marshals Service. Also, GAO study on savings possible from $1 coins, Selma Burke and the Roosevelt Dime, one-tenth ounce silver coins, US Mint seeks comment on metallic coinage materials, Spanish pesetas, Westward Journey Nickels, silver dollar values, and notable auctions. On to the links…

Legislation has been introduced seeking U.S. Marshals Commemorative Coins. Previous proposals had called for one ounce $5 gold coins struck in high relief, however the current proposal carries more typical specifications.

The U.S. Government Accountability Office recently issued a report (full report in pdf) indicating that switching from $1 bills to $1 coins could save $5.5 billion over 30 years. Here is some coverage from NPR which notes the essential step to switching is to “take the paper money away.”

Another article from Consumerism Commentary raises some questions about the study and some obstacles to implementation.

An article covering a scholarship established to honor Selma Burke. There has been controversy about whether John R. Sinnock’s portrait for the Roosevelt Dime was based on her work.

Following the dramatic rise in the price of silver, the Perth Mint introduced one-tenth ounce silver coins. As might be expected, the percentage premium compared to silver value is quite high.

Under Public Law 111-302, the Secretary of the Treasury was granted authority to do research and development for alternative metallic coinage materials. The Secretary delegated this authority to the US Mint, which is seeking public comment on factors to be considered.

A small town in Spain began accepting the peseta to lift the local economy. Although the country switched to the euro nine years ago, the old currency can still be converted at the Bank of Spain.

A description of some of the highlights from the Heritage Sacramento ANA U.S. Coin auction, including a 1796 Draped Bust Half Dollar graded PCGS AU58.

Do you encounter many of the Westward Journey Nickels in circulation?

Steve Roach’s coin market report provides the latest values for mint state generic Morgan and Peace Dollars, which continued to move higher.

And now for some notable auctions. First, the 1893 Isabella Quarter graded NGC MS 64. This commemorative coin is housed in an early generation NGC holder.

Next, a 1934-S Peace Dollar graded PCGS MS64. This issue is one of the keys to the series in uncirculated grades.

Last, an interesting double error. It’s a 1972-D Roosevelt Dime 90% off center with a 25% straight clip, which displays the full date and mint mark.

That’s it for another update. Have a great evening!
