How bees learn which odors to follow

ScienceDaily: Latest Science News
Scientists have traced odor memory to a certain area of the bee brain. How successful bees are in their search for food depends largely on how well they can, based on their odors, detect nectar-rich flowers from a distance and distinguish them from less promising plants. Researchers have investigated how and whether bees can recognize a relationship between the odor and nectar of a particular flowers and whether this association is localized in a certain area of the bee brain.

Crazy Things Seen on Runs

Running and Jogging

Every now and then I'll see a runner doing something so crazy or ridiculously hard during a run that it makes me think, "Wow, my run is easy compared to THAT!" This happened a couple of weeks ago when I was running with my team in New York's Central Park and we spotted a guy running while dragging a tire that was attached to a rope around his waist. We saw him and his Michelin several times during our run, so he was definitely doing significant mileage with the tire, not just 100-meter sprints.

Vstone Team Aces RoboMara 2011

Geeky Gadgets - Gadgets, Geek Gadgets, Cool Gadgets, Technology ...

No country on Earth has a citizenry so passionate for robots as Japan. Explaining why the Japanese public has such a strong fixation on mecha might be pinned cultural beliefs, though we prefer a more straightforward line of reasoning: kids raised on Gundam must surely have a soft spot for humanoid machines.

Robomara Champs

Especially the kids in Vstone team who must behugging each other numb and crying after their robot aced the RoboMara. Robo what? RoboMara. As in “Robot Marathon” held in Osaka Japan this week. In it, a bunch of home made robots of very impressive quality did a staggering 422 laps around a 100-meter track. Many fell by the wayside and by the final turn only two contenders remained.

Long story short, team Vstone won by a few inches but ever the gentlemen, they gamely posed with the second placers before the cameras. (It’s pictured up north.)

The RoboMara is a departure form the usual robot competitions in Japan. Where wrestling and battling ‘bots are the norm, the Robomara pitted engineering smarts and creative design to produce the optimum performing champ. Three cheers for the Vstone boys!

Update: More Vintage Soviet Space Stuff For Sale

Geeky Gadgets - Gadgets, Geek Gadgets, Cool Gadgets, Technology ...

Another historic piece of vintage Soviet space program is going under the hammer in New York next-next month. And no, it’s not decades long expired space food. A Vostok space capsule will be sold to the highest bidder, its price estimate anywhere between $2-10 million dollars.

Russian spacecraft

The Vostok 3KA-2 was used on a test run prior to Yuri Gagarin’s historic launch. Before the man himself went up, a dog and a mannequin were exposed to the possible rigors. It all went well and the space capsule faded from history.

Though the Bonhams auction will be selling space suits, Sotheyby’s is pulling off quite a feat by putting a space craft on the block. How long then before obsolete U.S. space shuttles ae sold to private collectors?

Anyway, those contemplating ownership of the Vostok should be the type who’re in awe of space craft. The Vostok might be discarded and technologically backward, but that doesn’t mean the design is useless. Simply studying its construction is enough to reverse engineer the tech and build a 21st century variant of it. There are still countries and private entities that want to embark on space missions, you know.

Of course, once again, our imaginations are getting the better of us. Maybe it’s best if the Vostok were purchased by someone who’d have it displayed for all the public to see.

NEC Breaks New Ground With Its Latest Fingerprint Scanner

Geeky Gadgets - Gadgets, Geek Gadgets, Cool Gadgets, Technology ...

NEC is an industry leader when it comes to biometric identification technology. True to their usually high standards, NEC have unveiled their latest product, the HS100-10. What it does better than most USB fingerprint scanners is no physical contact is necessary for a scan thanks to a very advanced algorithm.

NEC finger scan

Its official product name is the HS100-10 Contactless Hybrid Finger Scanner and as mentioned, there’s a USB interface for optimum ease-of-use. While there have been more than a few usb fingerprint scanners featured here at geeky Gadgets in the past, the NEC really stands apart thanks to its advanced-ness, meaning it’s so advanced, the closest competition is still struggling to meet its impossibly high standards.

More than just fancy tech, NEC has the track record to back its claim as the best in the biz. Numerous evaluations undertaken by the National Institute of Standards and Technology have proven NEC really is top dog in its field. Proof enough is the HS100-10, which is due this May. As of this writing, there’s no word on the price yet.

2012 Ford Focus Gets 40-mpg EPA Highway Rating in SFE Trim

Car Reviews - 2010 Car Reviews at CARandDRIVER.com - Car Buying ...

2012 Ford Focus SEL sedan

Ford’s new Focus will join the 40-mpg club. The compact has been rated by the EPA at 28 mpg city/40 highway—when the car is ordered in sedan form with the $495 SFE (or Super Fuel Economy) package. This package is paired exclusively with the company’s not-so-hot PowerShift dual-clutch automatic transmission, and outfits the Focus with aerodynamic wheel covers, low-rolling-resistance tires, a rear spoiler, and active grille shutters that can close to reduce drag—all of which help cut fuel consumption. Fuel economy ratings for other Focus trim levels and equipment combinations have not been released yet, but you can expect them to drop a few mpgs.

The Blue Oval is not the only company to offer an efficiency-oriented trim level in the interest of bragging rights. Chevrolet’s Cruze comes in a special Eco spec, which allows the company to tout the car’s 42-mpg highway rating—although that rating is specific to Cruzes with manual transmissions—while other Cruzes wind up in the mid-to-high 30-mpg range. That’s still nothing to be ashamed of, but this MPG maneuvering lends some credibility to Hyundai’s recent boasting that the Elantra is rated at 40 mpg highway regardless of transmission choice, and without tacking on any special packages.

Thanks to the efficiency-friendly aerodynamics of a longer sedan shape, the Focus SFE is able to just about tie the smaller, less-powerful Fiesta in EPA ratings. That car, in its own SFE trim, musters just 29 mpg city/40 highway, leaving the 118-hp Fiesta to compete against its 160-hp sibling on price and parking advantages alone.

At a later date, Ford will add engine stop-start functionality to the Focus, further improving economy. We’ll update you as soon as the Blue Oval spills the beans on EPA ratings for other Focus trim levels.

More Cache Location Visualization Tools

Geocaching Journal
There are plenty of ways to map and view the locations of geocaches, including the mapping tools available on geocaching.com, the software that comes with your GPSr, Google Earth, and other online tools. But lately I've been playing around with a data table mapping and visualization tool from Google called Fusion Tables. The application lets you upload data tables from spreadsheets, CSV files or KML files. Then you can easily visualize your data in graphs, charts and even maps (provided your data includes location information, such as lat/long coordinates). It's all done online, and you can even post the results on your website. All you need is a Google account. Here are some great examples.

Unfortunately, you cannot upload GPX files directly into Fusion Tables, but you can easily convert your GPX formatted files (pocket queries) to KML format using Google Earth, GSAK macros, or many other online tools. In the example below, I ran a pocket query for new caches (less than one week old) in my part of the world. I then took the GPX file from the downloaded pocket query, opened it in Google Earth, then saved it as a KML file, called "New.kml", which I then imported directly into Fusion Tables:

All the data from the pocket query file is retained, including the geometry (lat/long coordinates), which the application recognizes and uses to generate a map. You can then edit the map to your liking. Here I've color-coded the points based on the cache difficulty rating. I then copied the embeddable link and inserted it below:

Lots of potential here. If you use Fusion Tables for caching purposes, I'd love to hear about it.

Cache On!

iPad 2 4G LTE To Be Announced Next Week?

Geeky Gadgets - Gadgets, Geek Gadgets, Cool Gadgets, Technology ...

Next week we will see Apple unveil the second generation iPad, the iPad 2, and there is the possibility that they will also launch an iPad 2 with 4G LTE for Verizon Wireless.

Verizon CEO Daniel Meade recently told the Wall Street Journal that we can expect more form Apple on Verizon’s 4G LTE network, so does this mean the iPad 2?

iPad 2 4G LTE

“You’ll see more coming from Apple on LTE,” he said. “They understand the value proposition of LTE and I feel very confident that they are going to be a part of it.”

What this means we don’t exactly know as yet, he could possibly be talking about the iPhone 5, although there is also the possibility that Apple will launch a 4G LTE version of the iPad 2 next week.

This would make sense for Apple, whilst you can get an existing iPad on Verizon at the moment it involves using a MiFi mobile hotspot. The guys over at 9 to 5 Mac have found three different version of the iPad 2 listed in the SDK, which could point to a Verizon model.

February 25, 2011: Medal of Honor Commemoratives, 2007 Platinum Eagle Error, Sacagawea Dollars

Coins and Coin Collecting | News, Articles, and Information | Coin ...

Welcome to Coin Update!

We’re back for another round up of coin collecting news and articles to finish out the week! First, the release of the 2011 Medal of Honor gold and silver commemorative coins. Also, numismatic versions of the 2010 ATB 5 ounce silver coins, Royal Canadian Mint, 2007-W Proof Platinum Eagle Error, Sacagawea Dollars, Andrew Johnson Presidential Dollars, early cent and half cents, COMEX silver supply squeeze, and notable auctions. On to the links…

Today, the United States Mint released the 2011 Medal of Honor Commemorative Coins. The program includes $5 gold coins and silver dollars.

Dave Harper reflects on the fact that new commemorative coin release lacks the excitement of the 1982 Washington Half Dollar or 1984 Olympic commemoratives, potentially due to the escalating cost of the coins.

Although the important details of pricing and release date are still not provided, here is the available information on the numismatic versions of the America the Beautiful 5 ounce Silver Coins.

Whitman asks for help in defeating a Maryland sales tax bill that would remove the exemption for coins and bullion sales over $1,000.

During the past five years, the Royal Canadian Mint spent $85 million on marketing, making them the biggest government spender for advertising.

Ken Potter covers the 2007-W Proof Platinum Eagle die polishing error (frosted Freedom) and provides figures on the population of coins released to the public.

For his weekly column on CoinWeek, Greg Reynolds provides some suggestions for U.S. coins in the $1,000 to $5,000 range.

Does the original Sacagawea Dollar have one of the best U.S. coin designs since the mid-20th century?

The US Mint began sales of the Andrew Johnson Presidential Dollar rolls. However, after the price increase, it might be better to try to obtain them from a bank or wait for the coins to be added to the Direct Ship program.

An article detailing the production of half cents and cents from 1795 to 1796, including the reduction in weight, sourcing of copper, and introduction of the Draped Bust Cent design.

Patrick Heller discusses the huge COMEX silver supply squeeze that is developing and says to expect more volatile gold and silver prices in the next few weeks.

And now for some notable auctions. First, a collection of 1950-1963 Proof Sets, housed in two capital plastics holders.

Next, a 1923-D Saint Gaudens Double Eagle graded NGC MS 66+.

Last, here are the current auctions for sets of the 2010 America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins. Prices have come down from initial levels, even as the price of silver has risen.

That’s it for this update. Have a great weekend!
