Chevrolet Announces MyLink Infotainment System, Puts it in 2012 Equinox and Volt

On the heels of Toyota’s Entune and Hyundai’s Blue Link and in the vein of Ford’s Sync comes MyLink from Chevrolet. The hands-free, phone-connected infotainment system will be launched first in the 2012 Chevrolet Volt and Equinox.

What does it do? Like its competitors, MyLink allows drivers to control the stereo, place and receive phone calls, and control apps either using voice commands or through the touch-screen interface. Apps are stored on a tethered BlackBerry, iPhone, or Android device that is connected either over Bluetooth or through a USB cable; the first two apps, Pandora and Stitcher SmartRadio, pull in streaming audio. Navigation will be a separate add-on, details of which should follow soon.

There’s nothing groundbreaking about the system, and all of the usual suspects are involved. Nuance supplies the voice-recognition capability, as it does for Sync, Blue Link, and Entune, and the Pandora app appears just about everywhere, too. Given that, there’s no reason to think MyLink will be anything but competitive with the other systems.

While Chevy has only announced the Volt and Equinox as MyLink recipients so far, we’re told that other GM models will get the system at the same time and that it will be available across most of the company’s lineup within the next 18 months. We have a sneaking suspicion the 2012 Buick Verano will come with MyLink, as the company has already said the car will incorporate Pandora functionality.
