Keep Running on Vacation

Running and Jogging

One thing I love about summer vacations at the beach (besides the being on vacation part) is that I have more time to run. My husband and I can take turns watching the kids while the other person runs, so it's a lot easier to fit in runs. I know that's not the case for everyone -- sometimes it's hard to find the time and motivation to exercise when you're away. But if you do want to run on vacation, try some of these tips:

Do research before you leave. Check out sites such as Map My Run or Run The Planet for running routes at your destination. If you already have planned running routes, you won't feel as apprehensive about running at your destination once you arrive.

Ask the concierge for recommendations. You're not the first runner to stay at your hotel, so the staff most likely has a map with suggested walking and running routes.

Run in the morning. Running early means it won't interfere with your sightseeing, relaxation, or work-related activities. And if you're traveling to a warm weather climate, you'll avoid running in the heat of the day.

Stop in the local running shop. Running specialty shops are a great resource for out-of-town runners. Stop in and ask about suggested running routes. They may even offer a free group run that you can join.
