Each week, our German correspondent slices and dices the latest rumblings, news, and quick-hit driving impressions from the other side of the pond. His byline may say Jens Meiners, but we simply call him . . . the Continental.
From the Beijing auto show, I traveled directly to the 33rd Vienna Motor Symposium—arguably the most important conference of its kind. Volkswagen Group Chairman Ferdinand Piëch showed up with his wife Ursula; VW CEO Martin Winterkorn, his Audi counterpart Rupert Stadler, Daimler’s R&D chief Dr. Thomas Weber, and Renault’s EV director Alain Vignaud were all in attendance. What followed was two days of technical presentations and discussions; topics ranging from advances in the internal combustion engine to hybrids and electrics.
