We’re back for one more round up of coin collecting news and articles before the weekend break! First, legislation has been introduced in Congress which seeks to eventually phase out $1 Federal Reserve Notes in favor of $1 coins. Also, two recent numismatic product releases from the United States Mint, Ronald Reagan centennial medals, selling coins, mint and mint marks, highlights from Heritage’s Fall ANA auction, gold and silver prices, Royal Canadian Mint, Walking Liberty Half Dollars, and notable auctions. Legislation has been introduced which seeks to phase out $1 bills and replace them with $1 coins. As part of the plan, Susan B. Anthony Dollars would be sequestered and declared obsolete. The $1 bill could still be produced from time to time to meet the needs of collectors.

Yesterday, the United States Mint released the 2010-P Gettysburg Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin and the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set.
The centennial of Ronald Reagan’s birth will be celebrated this weekend and on Monday when football organizations throughout the United States use specially minted commemorative medals for the coin toss.

The prices of gold and silver have fallen sharply in the past two days. Here is an article published before the fall which compares gold’s rise to the Nasdaq in the 1990′s. To reach a comparable peak, gold would need to trade at $3,200 per ounce.
Some articles published today from the Wall Street Journal and Marketwatch. Silver had its worst dollar decline since 1980. Gold had it’s worst weekly performance since the mid-1980′s.
A federal appeals court ruled that Odyssey Marine Exploration must return to Spain the 17 tons of silver coins and treasure worth $500 million that were recovered from a sunken ship. The company will appeal the decision.
The Royal Canadian Mint has released a series of the colorized 25 cent coins featuring famous mythical creatures. The three coins feature the Sasquatch, Memphre, and Mishepishu.

And now for some notable auctions. First, here is a neat 1965 Lincoln Cent struck on a clad dime planchet. The mint error is authenticated by PCGS and graded MS63.
Next, here is a collection of 32 rolls of Presidential Dollars from 2007 P&D George Washington to 2010 P&D Abraham Lincoln. These are the US Mint issued numismatic rolls in their original white sealed boxes.
Last, a collection of Barber Quarters that is complete except for three dates. There are 71 different coins included.
