Coins and Coin Collecting | News, Articles, and Information | Coin ...

Welcome to Coin Update!

We’re back to bring you another round up of coin collecting news and articles from around the internet! First, information on the most recent bills introduced in Congress to deal with the growing $1 coin stockpile and an opinion editorial providing a different solution. Also, the 2012 Native American Dollar, commemorative gold coins, ANA World’s Fair of Money, Stack’s-Bowers Rarities Night auction, US Mint de-trashing process, coin values, Star Wars coins, Patrick Heller precious metals commentary, several articles on gold, Coins for Anything, and notable auctions. On to the links…

Another three bills have been introduced in Congress which seek to modify the $1 coin production or programs. Here’s a separate article that I wrote for the Washington Post on stockpile of $1 coins and all of the recent legislation.

Coverage of the Citizens Coinage Advisory’s discussion of the 2012 Native American Dollar designs.

The US Mint has now suspended sales of the 2011 commemorative gold coins. New pricing will be implemented under a grid structure similar to the one used for other numismatic gold coins.

As the ANA World’s Fair of Money approaches, here are some thoughts from Doug Winter on how the recent economic turmoil might impact the show and from Vic Bozarth who reflects on his first ANA show.

Coin Rarities & Related Topics writes about some of the coins included in Stack’s-Bowers Rarities Night auction. See part one and part two.

CoinWorld has some detailed information on the “de-trashing” process for unsold US Mint products.

The new PCGS Mobile CoinFacts will be available for free from August 12-20, 2011. After that, access will be free for anyone with a regular subscription.

Dave Harper discusses factors beyond mintage which may impact the value of coins.

Niue Island will issue a series of Star Wars coins. This will include 1 oz silver coins and silver plated base metal coins bearing images of characters from the original triology, with Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.

Following an impressive week for gold, Patrick Heller provides a report from the coin dealer front lines.

Here are some more articles on gold, which cover a variety of aspects: options and considerations for storing precious metals, the impact of rising prices on the refinery business, the increase in gold prospecting activity, and a look back at some of the observations and predictions made by “gold-bashers.”

An article on the growth and success of Coins For Anything, a company that makes custom designed commemorative coins.

And now for some notable auctions. First, the 2000 Sacagawea “Cheerios” Dollar and Lincoln Cent encapsulated by ICG. These coins were distributed in boxes of Cheerios and later found to have a different reverse design than the coins released for circulation.

Next, an auction for the four uncirculated 1995 Olympics Silver Dollars. These issues each have low mintages among the commemorative silver dollars.

Last, a huge lot of 118 State Quarter BU Rolls with a current bid still under face value. All of the rolls included in the lot are described in detail.

That’s it for another update. Have a great weekend!
