We’re back with a new round up of coin collecting news and articles from around the internet! First, as the price of silver recently reached a 31 year high, the value of the silver content in certain US Mint products is approaching the issue price. Also, numismatic product sales report, Mint of Finland CEO interview, challenge coins, Royal Canadian Mint $1 and $2 coins, Morgan Dollar pricing, Philadelphia Mint visit, Stacks-Bowers Numismatics, 2011 coins circulating, and notable auctions. Mint News Blog calculated the silver content and metal value of currently available US Mint products as the price of silver approached $34 per ounce.

The latest US Mint numismatic product sales report showed a jump in sales for First Spouse Gold Coins.

An interview with the Mint of Finland’s CEO discussing the Mint’s 150th anniversary and aspects of their coin design and issue. I have particularly liked several of their recent releases. Their 2011 Coin of the Year award winning coin is used for today’s coin image.

The Washington Post discusses the growing popularity of challenge coins, traditionally awarded within the military for exemplary service and morale boosting, but now used by agencies, politicians, and corporations like Starbucks.

The Royal Canadian Mint is considering changing the composition of the $1 and $2 coins to multi-ply plated steel alloy and adding advanced security features such as a lasermark and an electromagnetic signature.

Steve Roach provides some observations about pricing for Morgan Dollars, including the impact of quality within a given grade, rainbow toned coins, and generic coin price levels.

The Metro Bank coin counting machine, or “Magic Money Machine,” continues to see increased use from customers. The machines counted more than $28.6 million worth of coins in 2010.

Stacks-Bowers Numismatics will hold their inaugural auction at the Whitman Coin and Collectibles Expo in Baltimore. The highlight will be the proof 1836/1336 Overton-108 Capped Bust, Lettered Edge Half Dollar.

Coin Collectors Blog reports finding three 2011 Lincoln Cents in change. Several readers have also reported finding 2011 coins in circulation already.

And now for some notable auctions. First, the 1928 Hawaiian Half Dollar graded PCGS MS64 CAC. This commemorative coin had a limited mintage and was distributed primarily in Hawaii, making it a key issue.

Next, an interesting US Mint product from more than ten years ago. It’s a 2000-P Sacagawea Dollar in a money clip.

Last, an auction for both the proof and uncirculated versions of the Andrew Jackson’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coins in original US Mint packaging.
