Welcome to Coin Update!
We’re back with another round up of coin collecting news and articles from around the internet! First, the CCAC’s review of the design candidates for the William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Dollars. Also, the latest US Mint sales report, gold and platinum numismatic product prices, nickels and cents, ANA convention medal, Maastricht Paper Money Fair, Buffalo Nickels, dollar bills and coins, new Royal Canadian Mint releases, and notable auctions. On to the links…
The first part of coverage of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee’s discussion of the 2013 Presidential Dollar designs. This part covers design candidates and recommendations for William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt $1 coins.
The weekly US Mint sales report shows negative numbers for several prominent silver products, as collectors seem to have canceled orders or returned coins in anticipation of a price decrease.
Mint News Blog covers the US Mint’s latest product release and the price reductions for gold and platinum numismatic coins that occurred earlier today.
A nickel is once again worth less than five cents in intrinsic value. Dave Harper has some commentary on the current state of the cent and nickel.
A separate article which explains how hoarding coins can serve as protection against hyperinflation. “When countries revalue their currencies by dropping a zero in the aftermath of inflation, they often merely revalue the paper money. The coins are left circulating at face value.”
A European museum is holding “cleaning workshops” so people can help conserve a hoard of 840 Roman gold coins found in 2008 by a metal detectorist.
The Editor of CoinWorld revisists some comments about the ANA Board’s management approach made 14 years ago, that remain relevant today.
Here’s a look at the new ANA convention medal designed by Jamie Franki. It features Andrew Carnegie and Andrew Mellon.
CoinWeek has some video news coverage from the Maastricht Paper Money Fair held in Valkenburg Netherlands.
A discussion of the background and design of the Buffalo Nickel, followed by an evaluation of certain dates of the series.
Still more articles about $1 coins and $1 bills. Here is a summary of recent events from Vending Times, and an article that argues in favor of the transition from bills to coins “if common sense and convenience rule.”
New releases from the Royal Canadian Mint include three coins featuring Wayne Gretzky and the silver bullion Cougar coin.
And now for some notable auctions. First, an auction for two partial sets of Barber Quarters in vintage coin boards.
Next, an almost complete collection of 50 State Quarter Collector Spoons in the US Mint storage rack. The quarters from 1999 to 2007 are included.
Last, the 2010-W Buchanan’s Liberty $10 Gold Coin graded NGC PF 70 Ultra Cameo. This coin carries the obverse design of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagle.
That’s it for the update. Have a great evening!
