Coins and Coin Collecting | News, Articles, and Information | Coin ...

Welcome to Coin Update!

We’re back to bring you another fresh round up of coin collecting news and articles from around the internet! First, the latest monthly US Mint bullion coin sales figures, which are led by the strong performance of the American Silver Eagle. Also, 2011 ATB silver bullion sales, US Mint silver products and annual sets, security review following the $2.4 million theft from the Philadelphia Mint, Larry Shepherd releases statement, NGC auction central, $1 coin debate continues, coin collecting ideas for kids, ANA National Money Show exhibits, and notable auctions. On to the links…

Monthly sales of the United States Mint’s American Silver Eagle bullion coins reached 4,460,500, which is more than double the amount from the year ago period. The annual total is fast approaching last year’s record.

Meanwhile, sales of the five ounce America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins continue to be weak. Authorized purchasers ordered only 2,900 coins across the three available designs.

On the numismatic front, numerous silver products continue to be suspended while the products are repriced.  Dave Harper wonders how collectors will react once sales resume at presumably lower prices.

Lost in the mix are the US Mint’s 2010 annual sets, which continue to be available for sale. Two of the sets seem poised to have the lowest sales in decades, but will it matter?

The US Mint is undergoing a security review at each of its minting facilities following the theft of $2.4 million worth of error coins. The article also provides some new details on the theft.

Ken Potter reports on a second 1966 Lincoln Cent Double Die Reverse that was recently found.

Following his dismissal as the executive director of the ANA, Larry Shepherd released this statement published on CoinWorld. He has now joined the coin firm Harlan J. Berk Ltd.

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation has released NGC Auction Central, which maintains auction data for NGC-certified U.S. coins from certain auction houses.

Opinion articles on the topic of $1 bills and $1 coins keep on coming. Here is one against the $1 coin and one for the $1 coin.

Here are some interesting coin collecting ideas for children, along with a list of useful supplies and tools.

More than $100 million of rare coins and paper money will be on display at the ANA National Money Show held October 13-15.

And now for some notable auctions. First, the 1907 High Relief Saint Gaudens Double Eagle graded NGC MS 64. The popular rarity is listed with no reserve.

Next, all of the 1999-2008 Mint Sets, Proof Sets, and Silver Proof Sets available together in a single auction.

Last, the 1915 Panama-Pacific Gold Dollar Commemorative Coin graded PCGS MS65 with CAC sticker. Maybe it is time to revive this denomination for modern commemoratives.

That’s it for the update. Have a pleasant evening!
