With the current-gen BMW 5-series having just debuted last year, the company is planning to debut a lightly disguised concept version of its next super-hot M5 at the Shanghai auto show in April. As a preview, the company has released a 22-second teaser video of the car driving through a tunnel in the dark. If you’re a headlight enthusiast, you’ll probably be excited. For the rest of us, we’re looking forward to further info.
BMW hasn’t said a whole lot about the upcoming M5, but we do know the old car’s 5.0-liter V-10 engine is out. Its replacement will most likely be a twin-turbo V-8, perhaps similar to the 4.4-liter engine engine that powers the X5 M and X6 M. Power could stretch as high as 600 hp; the current range-topping 5er, the 550i, touts 400 hp and 450 lb-ft, so an M model would need a significant bump to really stand out. BMW’s DCT dual-clutch transmission will almost certainly be on the order sheet—and while that’s a great transmission in the M3, we hope the company will continue to offer a traditional three-pedal version as well. For more on the next M5, check out our preview of it here.
The video and caption on YouTube say “We’re all looking forward to Friday,” but as much as we’d all love a full reveal, but it turns out that it’s just another teaser in the pipeline. Keep your fingers crossed that it’s not more tunnel vision.
