9to5Mac has discovered a great new feature in the new Apple Lion OS X will allow you to use the updated Time Machine software in the new Apple Lion OS X to make ‘Local Snapshot’ backups without the need for any external drives to be connected, as on previous OS X releases.
The new ‘Local Snapshots’ feature can make backups of all file changes every hour and will then store these backups locally on your Mac’s internal hard drive.

Are Amazon thinking of releasing a free Kindle? The price of the Amazon Kindle has fallen quite a bit since it was originally announced, and if it continues to fall at the same rate it could end up being free.
When the Kindle first went on sale it was for $350, the price has fallen dramatically since then, and if you have a look at the graph below, you could get the impression that Amazon are on target to launch a free Kindle.

We have been geocaching in the Franklin and Louisburg area all weekend. He just started and already has an amazing geosense. I am looking forward to many more geocaching adventures with him.
Every now and then I'll see a runner doing something so crazy or ridiculously hard during a run that it makes me think, "Wow, my run is easy compared to THAT!" This happened a couple of weeks ago when I was running with my team in New York's Central Park and we spotted a guy running while dragging a tire that was attached to a rope around his waist. We saw him and his Michelin several times during our run, so he was definitely doing significant mileage with the tire, not just 100-meter sprints.
...No country on Earth has a citizenry so passionate for robots as Japan. Explaining why the Japanese public has such a strong fixation on mecha might be pinned cultural beliefs, though we prefer a more straightforward line of reasoning: kids raised on Gundam must surely have a soft spot for humanoid machines.
Especially the kids in Vstone team who must behugging each other numb and crying after their robot aced the RoboMara. Robo what? RoboMara. As in “Robot Marathon” held in Osaka Japan this week. In it, a bunch of home made robots of very impressive quality did a staggering 422 laps around a 100-meter track. Many fell by the wayside and by the final turn only two contenders remained.
Long story short, team Vstone won by a few inches but ever the gentlemen, they gamely posed with the second placers before the cameras. (It’s pictured up north.)
The RoboMara is a departure form the usual robot competitions in Japan. Where wrestling and battling ‘bots are the norm, the Robomara pitted engineering smarts and creative design to produce the optimum performing champ. Three cheers for the Vstone boys!

Another historic piece of vintage Soviet space program is going under the hammer in New York next-next month. And no, it’s not decades long expired space food. A Vostok space capsule will be sold to the highest bidder, its price estimate anywhere between $2-10 million dollars.
The Vostok 3KA-2 was used on a test run prior to Yuri Gagarin’s historic launch. Before the man himself went up, a dog and a mannequin were exposed to the possible rigors. It all went well and the space capsule faded from history.
Though the Bonhams auction will be selling space suits, Sotheyby’s is pulling off quite a feat by putting a space craft on the block. How long then before obsolete U.S. space shuttles ae sold to private collectors?
Anyway, those contemplating ownership of the Vostok should be the type who’re in awe of space craft. The Vostok might be discarded and technologically backward, but that doesn’t mean the design is useless. Simply studying its construction is enough to reverse engineer the tech and build a 21st century variant of it. There are still countries and private entities that want to embark on space missions, you know.
Of course, once again, our imaginations are getting the better of us. Maybe it’s best if the Vostok were purchased by someone who’d have it displayed for all the public to see.

NEC is an industry leader when it comes to biometric identification technology. True to their usually high standards, NEC have unveiled their latest product, the HS100-10. What it does better than most USB fingerprint scanners is no physical contact is necessary for a scan thanks to a very advanced algorithm.
Its official product name is the HS100-10 Contactless Hybrid Finger Scanner and as mentioned, there’s a USB interface for optimum ease-of-use. While there have been more than a few usb fingerprint scanners featured here at geeky Gadgets in the past, the NEC really stands apart thanks to its advanced-ness, meaning it’s so advanced, the closest competition is still struggling to meet its impossibly high standards.
More than just fancy tech, NEC has the track record to back its claim as the best in the biz. Numerous evaluations undertaken by the National Institute of Standards and Technology have proven NEC really is top dog in its field. Proof enough is the HS100-10, which is due this May. As of this writing, there’s no word on the price yet.

NEC Breaks New Ground With Its Latest Fingerprint Scanner (C) 2010 Geeky Gadgets
Ford’s new Focus will join the 40-mpg club. The compact has been rated by the EPA at 28 mpg city/40 highway—when the car is ordered in sedan form with the $495 SFE (or Super Fuel Economy) package. This package is paired exclusively with the company’s not-so-hot PowerShift dual-clutch automatic transmission, and outfits the Focus with aerodynamic wheel covers, low-rolling-resistance tires, a rear spoiler, and active grille shutters that can close to reduce drag—all of which help cut fuel consumption. Fuel economy ratings for other Focus trim levels and equipment combinations have not been released yet, but you can expect them to drop a few mpgs.
The Blue Oval is not the only company to offer an efficiency-oriented trim level in the interest of bragging rights. Chevrolet’s Cruze comes in a special Eco spec, which allows the company to tout the car’s 42-mpg highway rating—although that rating is specific to Cruzes with manual transmissions—while other Cruzes wind up in the mid-to-high 30-mpg range. That’s still nothing to be ashamed of, but this MPG maneuvering lends some credibility to Hyundai’s recent boasting that the Elantra is rated at 40 mpg highway regardless of transmission choice, and without tacking on any special packages.
Thanks to the efficiency-friendly aerodynamics of a longer sedan shape, the Focus SFE is able to just about tie the smaller, less-powerful Fiesta in EPA ratings. That car, in its own SFE trim, musters just 29 mpg city/40 highway, leaving the 118-hp Fiesta to compete against its 160-hp sibling on price and parking advantages alone.
At a later date, Ford will add engine stop-start functionality to the Focus, further improving economy. We’ll update you as soon as the Blue Oval spills the beans on EPA ratings for other Focus trim levels.

Next week we will see Apple unveil the second generation iPad, the iPad 2, and there is the possibility that they will also launch an iPad 2 with 4G LTE for Verizon Wireless.
Verizon CEO Daniel Meade recently told the Wall Street Journal that we can expect more form Apple on Verizon’s 4G LTE network, so does this mean the iPad 2?
“You’ll see more coming from Apple on LTE,” he said. “They understand the value proposition of LTE and I feel very confident that they are going to be a part of it.”
What this means we don’t exactly know as yet, he could possibly be talking about the iPhone 5, although there is also the possibility that Apple will launch a 4G LTE version of the iPad 2 next week.
This would make sense for Apple, whilst you can get an existing iPad on Verizon at the moment it involves using a MiFi mobile hotspot. The guys over at 9 to 5 Mac have found three different version of the iPad 2 listed in the SDK, which could point to a Verizon model.

iPad 2 4G LTE To Be Announced Next Week? (C) 2010 Geeky Gadgets
Apple is holding a special event next Wednesday, March the 2nd where they are expected to unveil the iPad 2, and we were expecting to have to wait a while after the iPad 2 is announced before it goes on sale.
It turns out that Apple may make the iPad 2 available shortly after it is unveiled next Wednesday, according to a report from Apple Insider, and we may even see it go on sale next week.
As well as the special event next Wednesday for the iPad 2 launch, it seems that Apple is also preparing a large scale product roll out, which logically would be the iPad 2.
We are hoping that if Apple does start selling the iPad 2 next week it will be available in the UK and Europe as well as the US, we will keep you guys updated as soon as we get some more information.
