Give Back to the Running Community

Running and Jogging

April is National Volunteer Month, so if you've been meaning to volunteer at a road race, next month is the perfect time to do it. Volunteering at a race is a great way to give back to the running community and experience the fun and excitement of a race (without the anxiety!)  If you've never run a race before, it's a good chance to get your feet wet before you take the plunge and sign up for a race. And volunteering can help save some money because races usually give volunteers incentives, such as free race registration or running gear.

March 30, 2011: 2011 American Silver Eagle, Old PCGS Holders, Trade Dollars

Coins and Coin Collecting | News, Articles, and Information | Coin ...

Welcome to Coin Update!

We’re back with another round up of coin collecting news and articles from around the internet! First, a description of the different versions of the 2011 American Silver Eagle that are expected to be available. Also, a new US Mint sales report, old PCGS and NGC holders, silver war nickels, more von NotHaus trail coverage, Trade Dollars, Heritage world and ancient coin auction, gold and silver legal tender in Utah, and notable auctions. On to the links…

An overview of the 2011 Silver Eagles, which are expected to be available in bullion, proof, collectible uncirculated format. Will there be a special 25th anniversary issue?

The chart of the day on Business Insider illustrates the incredible surge in sales of Silver Eagle bullion coins that has occurred over the past few years.

The latest US Mint sales report shows continued slowness in numismatic product sales. Several 2010-dated products have sold out or are no longer available.

Coingrader Capsule takes a look at Old Green Holders that “ain’t what they used to be.” This refers to older generation third party grading holders that may have been evaluated under stricter standards.

A Numismaster article on the silver war nickels issued from 1942 to 1945. The composition completely excluded nickel, in favor of silver, copper, and manganese.

From the group of 28 coins in the Nevada accumulation, collector Bruce Morelan chose to keep four coins for his personal type set.

The trial of Bernard von NotHaus drew little local attention, had few spectators, and lasted much shorter than anticipated.

An interesting examination of the Trade Dollars issued from 1873-1878 and in proof only version from 1879 -1885.

Preview and highlights of the world and ancient coins included in the Heritage auction conducted for the upcoming Chicago International Coin Fair.

Gold and silver coins are now legal tender in the state of Utah. As such, capital gains taxes within the state are eliminated, although federal taxes would still apply.

And now for some notable auctions. To start, a top graded example of the 1999-W $5 Gold Eagle struck with unfinished proof dies. The coin is graded PCGS MS70.

Next, a nice example of the proof 1964 Accented Hair Kennedy Half Dollar. It is rumored that the subsequent modification to the details in the hair were at the request of Jacqueline Kennedy.

That wraps up another update. See you next time!

March 28, 2011: San Francisco Mint Silver Eagles, Native American Dollar Launch

Coins and Coin Collecting | News, Articles, and Information | Coin ...

Welcome to Coin Update!

We’re back after the weekend break with another fresh round up of coin collecting news from around the internet! First, several authorized purchasers have begun selling their allocations of 2010 America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins. Also, the San Francisco Mint will strike Silver Eagles, 2010 Native American Dollar launch ceremony, Royal Canadian Mint, precious metals and coins, 1992 “Close AM” Lincoln Cent variety, the “coin deal of the decade,” 2011 quarter launch ceremonies, and notable auctions. On to the links…

Three of the US Mint’s authorized purchasers recently made their 2010 ATB Silver Bullion Coins available for purchase through relatively more accessible methods. Two out of the three are currently sold out.

The San Francisco Mint is expected to begin production of Silver Eagle bullion coins in May. For more than a decade, the coins have only been struck at the West Point Mint.

Coverage of the launch ceremony for the 2011 Native American Dollar. It was standing room only at the Plimoth Plantation visitor center.

The head of the Royal Canadian Mint was reappointed to a new three year term. During his previous term, the RCM achieved “dazzling profits,” but lost track of $15.3 million in gold.

For those looking to add precious metals, Harry Miller suggests buying coins where intrinsic value has increased to the point where premiums have nearly disappeared. This may provide a floor to your investment based on numismatic value.

A fourth example of the 1992 “Close AM” Lincoln Cent has been discovered. The coin, with a potential value of $5,000, was found while searching rolls of cents obtained from a bank.

Steve Roach observes that there is a shortage of “great and fresh objects” in both the rare coin and high-end art markets.

On that note, Legend Numismatics has just announced the “deal of the decade,” purchasing some incredible rarities that have been off the market for many years.

Launch ceremonies for the next two releases of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program have been scheduled.

And now for some notable auctions. First, the 1937-D 3 Legged Buffalo Nickel, graded PCGS AU58.

Next, a group of 37 Morgan Dollars in old PCGS rattler holders. The coins are graded MS63, MS64, or MS65. Close up pictures are included with the listing.

That’s it for this update. Have a great evening!

Rolls-Royce Opens Mega Dealership in Abu Dhabi, Unveils Phantom With Even More Mega Name

Car Reviews - 2010 Car Reviews at CARandDRIVER.com - Car Buying ...

Rolls-Royce’s Babylonian tendencies were in full bloom as it announced the opening of the world’s largest Rolls-Royce showroom in—where else—Abu Dhabi, United Emirates. The facility is nearly 10,000 square feet and will display but five cars at a time. Admittedly they’re five land yachts, but are they really so large as to require 2000-square-foot parking spaces? At least the dealership’s architects had some room left over to cram in a coffee bar (serving Arabic blend, we presume), a vehicle-configuration lounge, and, as you can see in the pictures, a few palm trees that get to trade life under the oppressive desert sun for at least a few years in climate-controlled rapture.

A Special-Edition Model, Too

The opening of the dealership turned into a birthday party of sorts: 2011 marks the 100th year since the first Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament was fitted to Rolls-Royce cars. Goodwood thus took the occasion to unveil yet another commemorative-edition Phantom as part of the company’s Centenary Collection. The Abu Dhabi debut is a Drophead Coupé model, officially referred to as—take a breath—the Rolls-Royce Spirit of Ecstasy Centenary Collection Phantom Drophead Coupé. Rolls will produce 100 Centenary Phantoms, Phantom Coupés, and Phantom Drophead Coupés; all will brandish polished “Star” wheels, Centenary wheel centers, four additional Rolls-Royce badges (without which no one would ever know it’s a Rolls), and, best of all, a solid silver Flying Lady. Inside, each of the, uh, SOECCP models feature silver interior veneers; Centenary-themed gauges, embossments, and clock; and, of course, the de rigueur commemorative plaque. A leather headliner also is part of the package, as is a cute Spirit of Ecstasy desk figurine inscribed with the vehicle’s VIN. The SOECCP models were available in just four colors, black, blue, pearl white, and “Wildflower,” with convertibles further distinguished by an Oyster White hood treatment.  We say “were available” because Rolls reports that all 100 have already been ordered.
