First HALE-D Test Flight A Promising Disaster

Geeky Gadgets - Gadgets, Geek Gadgets, Cool Gadgets, Technology ...

Hale what? HALE-D, as in High Altitude Long Endurance-Demonstartor. In other words, a newfangled airship. Wile its common knowledge that airships are old tech, the aircraft type has been in disuse for ages. But thanks to the extended campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq, airships are back in fashion. Especially in surveillance and security roles, which is the raison d’etre of the HALE-D.

First 3D Printed Plane Takes Flight

Geeky Gadgets - Gadgets, Geek Gadgets, Cool Gadgets, Technology ...

Seen below is the work of an Eosint P730, a nylon laser sintering tool used by Southampton University nerds to build an airplane. It’s a UAV if you want to get specific. Dubbed the SULSA, the aircraft that has flown successfully is the culmination of unique design features familiar to WW2 airplane buffs. This means it’s a double win for 3D printing and efficient aircraft production.

Apple Has More Money Than US Government

Geeky Gadgets - Gadgets, Geek Gadgets, Cool Gadgets, Technology ...

Like the Portal 2 song goes, this would be funny if it weren’t so sad. Not the fact that Apple has enough money to rebuild Cupertino in $20 dollar bills five times over, nobody would dispute the fact that it’s more than earned it. That whole corporation with more money than the country it’ currently residing in should be a bit of a wake up call, though.

Audi A6 Hybrid Confirmed For U.S.

Car Reviews - 2010 Car Reviews at CARandDRIVER.com - Car Buying ...

Officially, Audi still refuses to confirm that the A6 hybrid will be offered in the U.S. The fact that the hybrid will be built exclusively as a sedan was a strong indicator of U.S.  availability, a hint underscored by an Audi marketing executive’s admission that “hybrid and station wagon markets are mutually exclusive.”

Now, we have confirmation from several reliable sources within Audi that the hybrid will be sold in the U.S. Its basic technology will be identical to the European version’s: The EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder will be mated to an electric motor, and power will be transmitted to the front wheels through an eight-speed automatic. The power rating likely will be identical to the European car’s, at a combined 245 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque.

The U.S.-bound version will differ only in minor details. It will be launched in the 2012 calendar year, just as Audi introduces an attractive alternative: the A6 3.0 TDI diesel, with around 250 hp. Pricing for both will be similar—somewhere north of $55,000.

Fueling the Fire: Autism as a "Fashionable" Disorder

Autism - Signs, Symptoms, Treatments, Resources, Support for Autism

Dr. Allen Frances was among the lead doctors involved in creating the DSM-IV - the diagnostic manual which invented the autism spectrum we know today.  Asperger syndrome first appeared in that manual, as did the most recent incarnation of a disorder called Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified.  Typically, people with Asperger syndrome have strong speech and language skills but impaired social communications skills along with sensory dysfunction at some level.  People with PDD-NOS may be very similar to those with Asperger's - or may have some but not all of the symptoms associated with the most severe "autistic disorder."

New Diagnostic Code for Autistic Wandering Approved for October, 2011

Autism - Signs, Symptoms, Treatments, Resources, Support for Autism

A very large percentage of people with autism "wander" - meaning they simply get up and walk or run off, for no obvious reason and in no obvious direction.  This behavior is by no means limited to people with autism: the Alzheimers community may be even more vulnerable.   Wanderers often seem compelled to wander, which means that locked doors and fences aren't always enough to curb the behavior.  And, of course, caregivers can't possibly be vigilant all day and night, nor should they be asked to lock their loved ones in escape-proof settings.
